They just failed to see out a barrage of second-half pressure to earn what might be considered a deserved win.

Especially considering their bad start.

Striker Lee Phillips was carried off on a stretcher following an aerial clash with keeper Tim Deasy after only four minutes meaning an early appearance for Sam Smith.

But that change – along with a defensive reshuffle before the break as Sagi Burton replaced Gareth Jelleyman – did not prevent Garry Hill's side from dominating the first half.

Curtis Osano, pushed forward into midfield, saw a 20-yard drive held by Deasy and the Kenyan should have also done better with a far-post effort which missed the target.

Captain Curtis Woodhouse marked his return from suspension with a couple of shots from outside the penalty box. But it only needed a close-range effort to break the deadlock.

Smith fired low and Deasy carelessly fumbled, allowing Knight to pounce six yards out.

Diamonds were only really troubled when Paul Brown's strike was tipped away from the far post by Alan Marriott.

Early in the second half Diamonds Justyn Roberts and Burton were both harshly booked for fouls.

But, as the officials threatened to lose control, the visitors initially didn't look like giving up their advantage.

However, there was a scare just before the hour mark as Matt Henney broke into the box with Marriott making a low save before the follow-up went wide via the near post.

As heavy rain again began to fall, Diamonds continued to concede set-pieces from dangerous areas which put them under more pressure.

Marriott got himself down to hold onto substitute Nick Rogan's shot two minutes after his introduction as Barrow pushed on in search of a late equaliser.

Diamonds made a rare foray into the other half when Andy Burgess' corner was met with a header from Osano which was cleared off the line by Carlos Logan at the far post.

Burgess should have doubled the lead on the counter-attack with five minutes left, firing wide after link-up play between Osano and Knight.

Marriott had a fortunate escape when he dropped a left-wing cross and gathered safely at the second attempt. But that was his only mistake while Deasy had already been punished for an error with Knight's goal.

But another mistake proved costly 30 seconds into stoppage-time.

In a torrential downpour, Logan swung over a corner which Marriott dropped and Brown pounced at the far post.
